Iowa Yoga Festival Continues to Evolve

Des Moines, IA – The Sixth Annual Iowa Yoga Festival will be held the weekend of August 28 through August 30, 2015, at the Iowa Event Center. This year’s event will immerse attendees in the origins of yoga while embracing its festive spirit.

In 2010, James Miller founded the Iowa City Yoga Festival, which had a successful four-year run before moving to Des Moines. In the last two years, the Iowa Yoga Festival has continued to evolve. Local teacher Ann York produced the festival in 2014, and after a successful event, she realized that her true passion lies in teaching. “The event was high energy for the attendees and high quality for presenters and vendors. After the experience, I quickly realized that my passion is rooted in my own practice,” explained York. When it came to passing the torch, it didn’t take her long to decide on Mathew Koder. “When I started to contemplate handing over the reins, Mathew was the first person that came to mind. He is dedicated to the yoga practice and has a following, and he has been elected Best Yoga Instructor in Des Moines by City View three years in a row.” York felt that his knowledge, energy, and passion made him the perfect person to produce the 2015 Iowa Yoga Festival.

For Koder, a Des Moines native, taking on the festival is an act of service for the yoga community. By sharing the healing power of yoga through the festival programming, he hopes to leave an effect that lingers long after the event is over. “I want this weekend to leave people feeling so refreshed, so rejuvenated, and so inspired that the momentum of that single weekend will carry them through the next year,” says Koder. “This event will be a celebration of life, love, and our beautiful community.”

This year, the festival will feature a variety of yoga styles practiced in the Des Moines area and around the world. Presenters announced to date include Andrey Lappa, Doug Swenson, Jim Bennitt, Jules Green, Mara Healy, and more. The lineup of speakers will cover a variety of topics and techniques, as well as their journeys on their personal path to yoga. This year’s event will be held at Iowa Event Center: Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. The Iowa Yoga Festival is intended to emphasize the festive spirit of yoga through a weekend of practice, meditation, and more.
